A supplement label has more to offer than the product name on the front. Turn the container around and start with the Supplement Facts panel.
Start with the serving size
Check how much product makes up one serving before comparing ingredient amounts. A serving can contain more than one capsule or tablet.
Read the ingredient information
The panel lists active ingredients and their amounts per serving. Also look for the other-ingredients list, which can include flavorings, fillers, and binders. Keep the full label handy when you have a question about a particular product.
Take your questions with you
The amount suggested by a manufacturer is not a personal recommendation. A healthcare professional can help you work out whether a supplement and its serving size are appropriate for you.
A useful reading habit: write down anything you do not understand, then bring the label and your questions to your next conversation with your healthcare provider.
